Some full moons ask you to let go of something big. This one asks you to tidy up.

The February 2027 full moon is on Saturday, February 20 at 23:23 UTC (6:23 pm in New York; Sunday, February 21 at 07:23 in Beijing and Taipei), at 2°06′ Virgo. It is the Snow Moon, it falls on the Lantern Festival (the 15th day of the first lunar month), and it brings a penumbral lunar eclipse, greatest at 23:13 UTC. The eclipse is very subtle: at most a faint grey shading on one edge of the Moon. In astrology, the Virgo full moon is about sorting, health routines and being useful without being hard on yourself.

When is the February 2027 full moon?

The full moon is exact on February 20, 2027 at 23:23 UTC. In East Asia that is already the morning of February 21. Here are the full moon and the eclipse in three time zones:

The Moon is in Virgo from February 20 at 19:55 UTC until February 22 at 21:40 UTC, so the full moon mood runs across the whole weekend. If you look up and the Moon seems to sit among the stars of Leo, you are right: astronomers place it in the constellation Leo, and some moon-phase sites label it that way. Astrology uses the tropical zodiac, where this full moon is in Virgo.

Why is it called the Snow Moon, and why does it land on the Lantern Festival?

February's full moon is traditionally called the Snow Moon because February is often the snowiest month in North America. Other old names include the Hunger Moon and the Storm Moon.

In 2027 it also lines up with the Lantern Festival (Yuanxiao), on February 20, the 15th day of the first lunar month and the first full moon of the Year of the Goat. Lunar New Year fell on February 6, so the Lantern Festival closes the fifteen days of New Year celebrations with lanterns, riddles and sweet rice dumplings. If you are in China or Taiwan, the Moon looks roundest when you wake on February 21, the 16th day, which matches the old saying that the moon of the 15th is fullest on the 16th. For the year's start, see our Chinese New Year 2027 and Lichun guide, and for what to do and avoid until the Lantern Festival, our Chinese New Year 2027 dos and don'ts.

Can you see the February 20 penumbral eclipse?

Yes, but only just. In a penumbral eclipse the Moon passes through the pale outer part of Earth's shadow. This one comes very close to the dark inner shadow without touching it, so near the maximum you may notice a soft grey dimming on the Moon's northern edge. Most people will see an ordinary bright full moon, and that is fine.

  • Europe and Africa see the whole eclipse in the evening sky. In London the Moon has risen by 17:01, hours before it begins.
  • New York and eastern North America: the Moon rises at about 5:32 pm, already inside the faint shadow. The maximum at 6:13 pm comes with the Moon low in the east, so find a clear eastern horizon.
  • Beijing and Taipei: the eclipse begins at 05:12, but the Moon sets around 07:00 at dawn, before the maximum. There is little to see.

The reddish point about six degrees from the Moon is Mars, one day past its brightest opposition. This is the second eclipse of the February season after the February 6 solar eclipse in Aquarius. See our 2027 eclipses guide for the full year.

What does the full moon in Virgo mean?

A Virgo full moon is a harvest of the small things: your routines, your body, your work and your habits. Virgo is the sign of craft, health and service. Under its full moon, you can see clearly what is working, what is cluttered and what is draining you. Here are its three big themes:

  • Sorting. This is a natural time to clear a drawer, an inbox or a calendar. Virgo feels lighter when there is less to manage.
  • Health routines. The full moon highlights the gap between the routine you planned and the one you actually live. Keep what helps, and drop what is just guilt.
  • Being useful without self-criticism. Virgo loves to help and to improve, but its shadow is the inner critic. The question is not "what is wrong with me?" but "what would make this easier?"

The Sun sits opposite in Pisces, the sign of dreams, rest and surrender. So this full moon sits on the line between order and flow: make a little order, then let the rest go.

What makes this Virgo full moon different?

Three things: Mars, Uranus and Mercury. Mars sits right beside the Moon at 0°15′ Virgo, retrograde, and slips back into Leo the next day, so emotions may run hotter than Virgo's usual calm. Uranus in Gemini squares both the Sun and the Moon, making a mutable T-square, so expect a surprise, a sudden change of plan or an idea that arrives out of nowhere. And Mercury is retrograde in Aquarius, so this is a time to revise lists rather than start new ones.

Put together, the message is: fix one thing calmly, expect a twist, and let your plan bend. If you want the bigger picture, read our guides to Mars retrograde 2027 and Mercury retrograde in February 2027.

A Virgo full moon release ritual

This ritual takes about twenty minutes and needs one small space to clear, a notebook and a candle or lamp. Do it any time on February 20 or 21.

  1. Clear one small space. A desk, a shelf or a bag. Not the whole house. Virgo energy loves a finished task.
  2. Light a candle or lamp, and breathe. Three slow breaths, and notice how your body feels tonight.
  3. Write two lists. "What helps me" and "What only makes me feel guilty." Include habits, tasks and people's expectations.
  4. Release one item from the second list. Cross it out and say, "I don't need to carry this."
  5. Choose one kind habit to keep. Write it on a small card and put it where you will see it.
  6. Step outside if you can. Look at the Snow Moon, or at a lantern, and thank yourself for the work you have already done.

Our full moon rituals guide has more ideas, and the October 2026 Taurus full moon offers a ritual for knowing what is worth keeping.

Journal prompts for the Virgo full moon

Use these prompts on the night of the full moon or the morning after:

  • What small routine actually makes my days better?
  • Where am I being harder on myself than I would be on a friend?
  • What am I still doing out of habit, not because it helps?
  • Which task would feel good to finish this week?
  • What does "good enough" look like for me right now?
  • How can I be helpful without overgiving?

Which zodiac signs feel the February 2027 full moon most?

Virgo and Pisces feel it most, followed by Gemini and Sagittarius. All four are mutable signs, and the T-square with Uranus hits the early degrees of each.

  • Virgo: a personal milestone. Something about your body, image or daily life reaches a turning point.
  • Pisces: relationships are in focus. A partner or close person shows you what needs balancing.
  • Gemini: with Uranus in your sign, home and career pull in different directions. Choose one change, not five.
  • Sagittarius: a work goal and a private need meet. Rest is part of the plan.
  • Taurus and Capricorn: an easy trine. A good weekend to finish a creative or study project.
  • Leo: Mars returns to your sign the next day, so this full moon is about money and self-worth before the energy turns to you.

Is the February 2027 full moon good for anything in particular?

It is excellent for clearing, finishing and resetting routines. It is less suited to starting something brand-new, because Mercury is retrograde and the full moon is a time of completion. Use it to tidy, rest and choose what to keep. Then plant new intentions at the new moon in Pisces on March 8.
