The New Moon in Aquarius on Saturday, February 6, 2027 is an annular "ring of fire" solar eclipse. The Moon reaches 17°38′ Aquarius at 15:56 UTC (10:56 am in New York; 23:56 in Beijing, Hong Kong and Taipei), and greatest eclipse follows at 15:59 UTC. The ring is visible from Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and the South Atlantic, and the eclipse lands on Lunar New Year's Day itself. Astrologically it is a North Node eclipse: a fresh start for friendships, community and the future you want to build.

When is the February 6, 2027 solar eclipse?

The whole eclipse runs for about six hours on February 6, from 12:57 to 19:02 UTC. Here are the key moments in three time zones:

MomentUTCNew York (EST)Beijing / Hong Kong / Taipei
Partial eclipse begins12:577:57 am20:57
Annular (ring) phase begins somewhere on Earth14:049:04 am22:04

Annular phase ends17:5512:55 pmFeb 7, 01:55
Partial eclipse ends19:022:02 pmFeb 7, 03:02

At the point of greatest eclipse, over the South Atlantic off southern Brazil, the ring lasts up to 7 minutes 51 seconds, a long, generous ring. The Moon covers about 93% of the Sun's diameter, leaving a bright, even ring.

Where can you see the ring of fire?

The ring is visible along a path about 280 km (175 miles) wide that starts in the Pacific, crosses Chile and Argentina, passes over Uruguay near Punta del Este and a sliver of far southern Brazil, runs across the South Atlantic and ends at sunset in West Africa: Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria.

A partial eclipse is visible across much of South America, much of Africa and parts of Antarctica, and a small partial eclipse appears at sunset in Spain and Portugal. The eclipse is not visible from North America or Asia. In New York the Moon's shadow never arrives, and in Beijing the eclipse happens close to midnight. You still feel an eclipse astrologically wherever you live, and you can watch it live on observatory streams.

What does a solar eclipse in Aquarius mean?

A solar eclipse is a New Moon turned up to full volume, so read this one as a powerful new beginning in the Aquarius parts of life: friendships, groups, community, technology, causes you care about and your hopes for the future. Aquarius asks a clear question: who are your people, and what are you building together?

This eclipse sits close to the North Node, which is near 20° Aquarius, so the traditional reading points forward. North Node eclipses tend to open doors and bring in new people, invitations and ideas rather than close chapters. It belongs to the Leo–Aquarius eclipse series that started with the February 17, 2026 annular eclipse, also in Aquarius, and it continues the theme: the balance between your own heart and spotlight (Leo) and your place in the bigger group (Aquarius).

Here is what that can look like in real life:

  • A new circle forms: a club, a team, a group chat that becomes a real community.
  • An old friendship changes shape, and you see who stays close.
  • A future goal suddenly feels concrete enough to plan, with dates and names attached.
  • You feel ready to be a little more unusual and a little more yourself in public.

Eclipse effects are traditionally felt for about six months, so what starts now often fully shows itself by the August 2, 2027 total solar eclipse in Leo.

Why does this eclipse fall on Lunar New Year?

Because Chinese New Year is a New Moon. The lunar year usually begins on the day of the second New Moon after the winter solstice, counted in Beijing time, and in 2027 that New Moon is also an eclipse. It is a close call: the Moon reaches exact New Moon at 23:56 Beijing time, just four minutes before midnight. Four minutes later and Lunar New Year 2027 would have been on February 7.

So the Year of the Fire Goat opens with a ring of fire. Lichun, the Start of Spring, falls two days earlier on February 4, which means the eclipse arrives right as both Chinese calendars have turned. If you celebrate both traditions, this is a lovely moment to set one intention for the lunar year and one for your Aquarius house at the same time. Our Chinese New Year 2027 and Lichun guide has the full calendar.

What else is happening in the sky at this eclipse?

The eclipse chart is busy, and three planets shape its tone:

  • Jupiter at 22°37′ Leo opposes the eclipse. Jupiter, retrograde in the sign opposite, adds generosity and big feelings. Partners and close friends play a large part in what begins now.
  • Mercury is about to turn retrograde. Mercury sits at 5° Pisces and stations retrograde three days later, on February 9 at 17:36 UTC. Start the new thing, then give the details a few weeks to settle. Our Mercury retrograde 2027 dates list the whole cycle.
  • Mars is retrograde in Virgo at 5°40′, and Uranus stations direct at 1°41′ Gemini on February 8. Plans that stalled in January can start moving again, slowly and on your terms.

Pluto is also in Aquarius, at 5°30′, so this eclipse carries the long Pluto-in-Aquarius story of power shifting toward groups, networks and shared technology.

What does the Aquarius eclipse mean for your sign?

Use your Sun sign and your rising sign. The rising sign is usually the more accurate of the two, and the house the eclipse lands in shows where the new start happens:

Aquarius1stYour identity, look and personal direction

Can you set intentions on a solar eclipse?

Yes. An eclipse New Moon is a strong moment for intentions. The traditional advice is simply to keep them open-handed: name the direction, not every detail, because eclipses like to surprise you with the route. Here is a simple Aquarius eclipse ritual:

  1. Choose your time. Anywhere from the exact eclipse to the next evening works well. In New York that is late morning on Saturday; in Asia it is the night of Lunar New Year.
  2. Write three lines. One for a person or group you want to grow closer to, one for a future goal, and one for a way you want to be more yourself.
  3. Add one small action. Send the message, join the class, sign up for the group. Aquarius rewards doing something with other people.
  4. Close with gratitude for your friends, the ones you have and the ones still on their way.

Our New Moon ritual guide has more ways to work with intentions.

How do you watch an annular eclipse safely?

Never look directly at an annular eclipse without proper eye protection, not even during the ring phase. A thin ring of Sun is still bright enough to damage your eyes. NASA's guidance is simple:

  • Use certified eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer that meets the ISO 12312-2 standard. Ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe.
  • Check your glasses before use and throw them away if they are scratched, torn or damaged. Supervise children the whole time.
  • Never look through a camera, binoculars or a telescope while wearing eclipse glasses. Optics concentrate sunlight and need their own certified solar filter fitted on the front.
  • Try indirect viewing: a pinhole projector, or a kitchen colander, casts little crescents or rings on the ground. Stand with your back to the Sun.
  • It is still a long day outside, so wear sunscreen.

What comes after the February 2027 eclipse?

Eclipses come in pairs. Two weeks later, the Full Moon of February 20, 2027 at 23:23 UTC (6:23 pm in New York; February 21, 07:23 in Beijing) is a penumbral lunar eclipse at 2°06′ Virgo, a gentle eclipse that brings a subtle completion. Mercury retrograde runs from February 9 to March 3, so the weeks between the eclipses are good for revisiting plans rather than rushing them. The next big eclipse is the August 2, 2027 total solar eclipse in Leo. See our 2027 eclipses guide for the full year.

Frequently asked questions

What time is the solar eclipse on February 6, 2027?
