When is Mercury retrograde in 2027?

Mercury stations retrograde on February 9, June 10 and October 7, 2027, and turns direct on March 3, July 4 and October 28. Here is the full calendar, with the pre-shadow and post-shadow dates explained further down.

Positions use the tropical zodiac. In total, Mercury is retrograde for about 67 days in 2027, roughly 18% of the year.

• Pisces → Aquarius: retrograde Tue Feb 9 at 12:36 p.m. EST in New York, which is Wed Feb 10 at 1:36 a.m. in Beijing/Taipei. Direct Wed Mar 3 at 7:32 a.m. EST, or 8:32 p.m. the same day in Beijing/Taipei.
• Cancer → Gemini: retrograde Thu Jun 10 at 2:15 p.m. EDT, which is Fri Jun 11 at 2:15 a.m. in Beijing/Taipei. Direct Sun Jul 4 at 3:39 p.m. EDT, which is Mon Jul 5 at 3:39 a.m. in Beijing/Taipei.
• Scorpio → Libra: retrograde Thu Oct 7 at 10:37 a.m. EDT, or 10:37 p.m. the same day in Beijing/Taipei. Direct Thu Oct 28 at 10:11 a.m. EDT, or 10:11 p.m. the same day.

So in Beijing, Hong Kong and Taipei the first retrograde runs February 10 – March 3 and the second runs June 11 – July 5. The first pre-shadow date, January 25 at 18:57 UTC, is already January 26 at 02:57 in Beijing/Taipei. The other shadow dates keep the same calendar day in all three places.

What signs is Mercury retrograde in during 2027?

Mercury is retrograde in Pisces and Aquarius, then Cancer and Gemini, then Scorpio and Libra. Every 2027 retrograde starts in a water sign and ends in an air sign, and each one crosses a sign boundary on the way back.

• February 9 – March 3, Pisces → Aquarius. Mercury turns retrograde at 5°59′ Pisces and moves back into Aquarius on February 18 at 12:15 UTC. Its inferior conjunction with the Sun, when it passes between Earth and the Sun, falls the same day, February 18, at about 29°48′ Aquarius. • June 10 – July 4, Cancer → Gemini. Mercury turns retrograde at 6°22′ Cancer, passes its inferior conjunction on June 23 at about 1°40′ Cancer, and backs into Gemini on June 26 at 07:19 UTC. It turns direct at 27°28′ Gemini and re-enters Cancer on July 12.
• October 7 – October 28, Scorpio → Libra. Mercury turns retrograde at 4°56′ Scorpio and backs into Libra on October 16 at 07:36 UTC. The inferior conjunction is October 19, at about 26°01′ Libra. It turns direct at 19°19′ Libra and returns to Scorpio on November 10.

The shadow periods are the stretches before and after a retrograde when Mercury is crossing the same degrees of the zodiac as the retrograde itself. They are an astrological idea rather than an astronomical event, but many people find them a handy way to plan.

• Pre-shadow: begins when Mercury first reaches the degree where it will later station direct. In 2027 that is January 25 at 18:57 UTC (20°55′ Aquarius), May 26 at 06:03 UTC (27°28′ Gemini) and September 17 at 07:29 UTC (19°19′ Libra).
• Retrograde: the backward stretch between the two stations.

Is Mercury really moving backward?

No. Mercury always orbits the Sun in the same direction; retrograde is an apparent motion seen from Earth. The planet does not physically start moving backwards in its orbit. It only looks that way from where we stand.

Mercury circles the Sun in about 88 days, Earth in about 365, and Mercury passes between Earth and the Sun about every 116 days (to be precise, an 87.969-day orbit and a 115.88-day cycle between those passes). Around each of those passes, Mercury appears to slow, stop, drift west against the stars for about three weeks and then resume, which is why there are three or four retrogrades a year. A good way to picture it is runners on a track: the slower runner seems to slide backward as the faster one overtakes.
