Spring Equinox 2027: March 20 Date, Time and Your Aries Season Guide

What is the spring equinox?

The equinox is the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north. After it, the Northern Hemisphere gets more daylight than darkness until the autumn equinox in September. The date moves between March 19 and 21 because our calendar year and the solar year don't line up exactly. In 2027 it lands on March 20 in UTC.

"Equinox" means "equal night," but day and night are not perfectly equal on the day itself, because sunlight bends through the air and sunrise is counted from the top edge of the Sun. In New York, day and night are closest to equal around March 17. By the equinox, the day is already about 12 hours and 8 minutes long.

A simple spring equinox ritual

This takes about twenty minutes. You need a candle, a notebook and, if you like, an egg. Do it on the evening of March 20 or the morning after.

1. Balance. Stand with your feet flat and take three breaths: in for four counts, out for four. The equinox is a balance point, so start there.

What is Chunfen, the Chinese spring equinox?

Chunfen (春分) is the spring equinox in the Chinese calendar, and in 2027 it falls on March 21 at 04:24 Beijing time. It is one of the 24 solar terms. In Chinese reckoning, spring already began at Lichun on February 4 (see our Chinese New Year and Lichun 2027 guide), so Chunfen is the middle of spring, the day it is split evenly in two.

On the lunar calendar, March 21, 2027 is the 14th day of the second month, one day before the full moon. Popular customs include standing eggs, flying kites and eating fresh spring greens.
